Ukraine Expands List of National Security Threats with Russian Artists
The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine has expanded its list of individuals considered as threats to the nation’s security. Russian singer Yaroslav Dronov, known as Shaman, and actor Alexey Kravchenko, recognized for his roles in the TV series “Brigada” and internationally released films such as “Bastards” or “Svolochi” are the newest additions to this list. The continuous effort to curb the impact of Russian cultural figures and media personalities who are seen as potential underminers of Ukrainian sovereignty or promoters of narratives contrary to Ukrainian national interests has seen the list grow to a total of 213 blacklisted cultural and artistic figures.
Expanding Sanctions and Limiting Influence
The inclusion of these individuals in the security threat list is part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to sanction and limit the influence of Russian personalities who are perceived to support Russian foreign policy. The country is also planning to create a ‘white list’ of Russian artists who oppose Russia’s special operations in Ukraine.
Russian Invasion and Global Response
In the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Western countries like the US and the EU have either introduced or significantly expanded sanctions targeting individuals, banks, businesses, monetary exchanges, and exports and imports. Major multinational companies, including Apple, IKEA, ExxonMobil, and General Motors, have individually decided to apply sanctions to Russia. Even historically neutral countries like Switzerland and Singapore have agreed to partial sanctions.
The Fate of Opposition in Russia
In a recent development, jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has been moved to an isolated penal colony in the Arctic, a move that has been condemned by the US and France. The harsh conditions and lack of contact with the outside world in the colony have raised concerns for Navalny’s wellbeing. The Kremlin’s targeting of Navalny and his supporters has intensified, especially in the lead up to the presidential vote in March 2024.
