San Luis Valley – Colorado’s Affordable Haven for Artists

Affordable Living and Creative Space: Young Artists Drawn to Colorado’s San Luis Valley

In the heart of Colorado, the San Luis Valley, a region known for its economic struggle, is witnessing an unexpected influx of young artists drawn by affordable living costs and a thriving creative environment. Despite being one of the poorest regions in the state, the valley has become a beacon for creatives seeking a break from the high costs of ski towns and urban centers.

Affordable Living Draws Young Creators

Madeline Ahlborn, a 31-year-old painter, is one such artist who found her haven in the valley. Ahlborn recently acquired a large church in Monte Vista for a mere $100,000, with plans to transform it into a community art space. This venture, made possible by her parents’ financial support and a Rural Women’s Business Loan, underscores the appeal of the area for artists seeking affordable living and creative space.

Supportive Community Bolsters Artistic Growth

The region’s appeal doesn’t stop at affordability. The San Luis Valley also offers a supportive community for the arts, as noted by Liz Hensley, a business professor at Adams State University and an Alamosa town councilwoman. She has observed a growing trend of young, educated creatives flocking to the area, enriching the local culture and economy.

Increased State Support and Future Prospects

The state’s support for the arts has further boosted the attractiveness of the valley. Several communities in the region have received the Colorado Community Revitalization Grant, and the state’s economic development office has initiated programs to support the arts. The area’s affordability, with median home prices under $350,000 compared to much higher prices in other counties, and a cost of living significantly lower than in Boulder County, amplifies its allure for the artist community.

Tracy Ross, a Sun reporter, is closely covering the region’s economic and artistic development and plans to expand on the economic attractiveness of rural areas to young artists. This trend in the San Luis Valley could mark the beginning of a renaissance, turning the area into a thriving hub for artists and creatives.
