Drake has reacted to the debatable comments Yasiin Bey made over the weekend.
On Monday night, January 15, the “Rich Flex” rapper took to his Instagram Stories to share a clip of a younger Method Man describing what Hip-Hop culture is. In his caption, Drake appears to talk directly to Bey, f.k.a. Mos Def, by referencing the song “Umi Says” off the seasoned MC’s 1999 album Black On Both Sides. It’s the first reaction he’s publicly shared since Bey’s comments about him set the Internet ablaze.
“What umi say again? Lemme shine my light king don’t change up now,” Drake wrote under the video.
Yasiin Bey became a trending topic on Sunday after he was asked if Drake is Hip-Hop. During an appearance on The Cutting Room Floor podcast, Bey agreed Drake’s music is “likeable” but in his eyes, it’s pop music. He also claimed the commercial appeal of Drake’s music could be a sign of something that could lead to Hip-Hop’s downfall.
“Drake is pop to me,” Bey said. “In the sense like, if I was in Target in Houston and I heard a Drake song. It feels like a lot of his music is compatible with shopping… or shopping with an edge in certain instances.”
“What happens when this thing collapses?” Bey asked later on. “What happens when the columns start buckling? Are we not in some early stage of that at this present hour? Buying and selling… where’s the message that I can use? What’s in it for your audience?”
Bey’s comments sparked plenty of debate online over the holiday weekend. Some fans argued Bey had a point and noted Drake’s pop star behavior in recent years.
