Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki unveiled a remarkable collection of 15 original masterpieces from 11 of Europe’s most influential modern artists, including Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, and Henri Matisse. This significant exhibition, entitled ‘Paths through Modernity’, became a reality thanks to a generous donation from the late American collectors Julian and Josie Robertson, who have had ties with New Zealand since the late 1970s. The artworks, which include Picasso’s ‘Femme à la résille’ (1938) and Matisse’s ‘Espagnole (buste)’ (1922), were collectively valued at $178 million, marking one of the most substantial philanthropic contributions to New Zealand’s cultural scene.
A Gift from Across the Seas
The Robertsons, renowned American art collectors, forged a bond with New Zealand in the late 1970s. Their love for the Land of the Long White Cloud never waned, and their generosity has left an indelible mark on the nation’s cultural landscape. ‘Paths through Modernity’ showcases 15 original masterpieces, including work from Picasso, Matisse, and Dali, collectively valued at $178 million.
“Julian and Josie Robertson had a deep appreciation for New Zealand’s beauty and the warmth of its people,” shared their daughter, Kate Robertson. “They would be thrilled to know that their collection is now available for everyone to enjoy.”
A Wealth of Artistic Riches
The exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of late-19th and early- to mid-20th century European modernism. Among the standout pieces is Picasso’s ‘Femme à la résille’ (1938), featuring the artist’s lover Dora Maar. Matisse’s ‘Espagnole (buste)’ (1922) is a stunning example of his mastery of line and form. The display also includes works from Marc Chagall, Alberto Giacometti, and René Magritte.

A Cultural Kaleidoscope
In addition to the European masterpieces, the gallery emphasizes the importance of representing South Asian art in Auckland, seeking to share diverse Asian stories within the city. “Auckland is a melting pot of cultures, and it’s important that our galleries reflect that richness,” commented Devenport.
