Calling all creatives!
Brooklyn Museum, the borough’s mecca for art and culture, is turning 200 this year and to celebrate, the center is calling for local artists to share their work in a first-of-its-kind open exhibit this fall.
“Brooklyn Artists Exhibition” — set to open Oct. 4 — will include artworks across all mediums, spotlighting a medley of borough-based artists in a showcase curators say is unlike anything in the museum’s bicentennial history.
According to center leaders, this anniversary marks the organization’s longstanding legacy as a cultural center grounded in fostering creativity. With that in mind, they say it only seemed fit to continue that legacy by featuring works from the same neighborhoods the museum serves.
“The Brooklyn Museum is a cornerstone of the city’s culture. For 200 years, we have brought people together to engage in the dynamic energy of Brooklyn and all that the borough represents, from creativity to innovation to community,” said Barbara M. Vogelstein, chairman of the Brooklyn Museum’s Board of Trustees. “Our next chapter will build on our strengths as we continue to champion art that awakens, provokes, and inspires.”
The exhibit will focus on makers who have lived or worked in the community over the last five years.
Applications are currently open, and will remain open through April 7. Makers can check out the Brooklyn Museum website for more details.
Additional anniversary celebrations will include a special birthday edition of Brooklyn Museum’s monthly event, First Saturdays, a reinstallation of its American Art Galleries, the opening of Solid Gold — a new immersive exhibit — and other exclusive collections.
