This year, the UK’s leading music company has collaborated with London-based artist Lakwena Maciver for the BRIT Awards. As part of the commission, Lakwena has designed the artwork titled TIL THE SUN COMES UP which will feature as a keep-sake for guests as part of the exclusive invitation for the Universal Music BRITs after-party (2 March), the hottest ticket on the UK showbiz calendar. Lakwena’s signature kaleidoscopic swirls will also feature at the annual event.
Lakwena says, “I’m very grateful to be part of the creative community in the UK right now, and collaborating with Universal Music on this project feels like a really meaningful expression of the relationship between art and music. More and more I value relationships, community, and coming together, and this is a wonderful opportunity for us to do that.”
Based in London, Lakwena has exhibited her internationally acclaimed art in cities like London, Paris, Rotterdam, New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Miami, as well as prestigious institutions including Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Somerset House, the Southbank Centre in London, and the Rotterdam Kunsthal. Her public works range from the UK’s largest public artwork on an electrical substation in London to installations at diverse locations such as a juvenile detention centre in Arkansas, a monastery in Vienna, and the iconic Bowery Wall in New York City.
Known for vibrant colour and bold text, Lakwena’s joyful and subtly subversive pieces draw inspiration from everyday experiences and popular culture, conveying messages of hope and connection with an instinctive and autodidactic approach, resulting in visceral, rhythmic, and immersive creations.
Lakwena follows acclaimed artists Yinka Ilori, Ashton Attzs and Matt Dosa in collaborating with Universal Music on the BRIT Awards.
