New art exhibition offers insight into artists’ perspectives at K-State’s Beach Museum

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – A new art exhibition is offering insight into artists’ perspectives at Kansas State University’s Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art.

According to Kansas State University, the new exhibition offers a behind-the-scenes look at art studios from artists’ perspectives.

K-State officials said “Where the Magic Happens: Artists in the Studio” runs through Saturday, Oct. 19, in the Beach Museum of Art’s Mary Holton Seaton Gallery West.

Officials with K-State said to explore the studios of artists through the artists’ own eyes in this exhibition of works from the museum’s permanent collection. Prints, drawings and other works depicting artists in their studios provide an intimate look at a deeply personal activity: creation. Through these pieces, viewers can learn more about the nuts and bolts of making art.

K-State officials indicated the exhibition includes tools and other collateral materials used in the studios of Charles Marshall, Herschel C. Logan and Bernard Steffen, among other artists. Light-sensitive works on paper in this exhibition will be replaced during the summer, so be sure to look out for a new set of studio views.

“I find that visitors are often curious about the process of creating, and these images allow them to go behind the scenes,” said Kathrine Schlageck, associate curator of education for the Beach Museum of Art and organizer of the exhibition. “It is especially fun to have the tools used by some of the artists.”

K-State officials said “Where the Magic Happens: Artists in the Studio” is sponsored by the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation’s Lincoln & Dorothy I. Deihl Community Grants Program.

K-State officials noted the Beach Museum of Art is on the southeast corner of the K-State campus at 701 Beach Lane. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Admission to the museum is free, and free parking is available adjacent to the building.
