“Storyline,” an exhibit featuring the work of Zachary Matlock and Scotty Colin, will be on display April 6 to May 4 at the Canvas + Clay Gallery, 233 F St., Eureka.

Arts Alive! receptions are planned from 6 to 9 p.m. on April 6 and May 4. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and by appointment.

Matlock is a Canvas + Clay artist and Colin is a guest artist for this exhibit.

Matlock is a prolific artist whose pen and ink drawings reflect his passion for film and fantasy. An avid moviegoer, Matlock often leans toward imagery of dark and dangerous creatures. His lighter side and appreciation for humor, however, are also prevalent in his depictions of animated characters and real-world animals. Cats, especially.

Outside of his practice, Matlock is a connoisseur of music who enjoys sharing his custom playlists with peers at The Studio. He joined The Studio in 2018. His short horror film, “Beware of Bigfoot,” can be found on the program’s YouTube channel — Canvas and Clay Video Workshop.

Colin recently relocated to Eureka from Vancouver, British Columbia, and this will be his first time exhibiting his artwork in Humboldt County. As a self taught artist, Colin began exploring his creativity while taking an art therapy class during a challenging point in his life. His creativity that was sparked during this period gave him the ability to see the profound beauty in life while understanding the acceptance of the dark shadow that continually accompanies it. He believes that integrating one’s own shadow will help them move toward a greater sense of self-awareness and well-being. Instead of denying or suppressing the shadow, he sees the value of shining a light on it. Colin searches for insight into hidden truths through his spiritual practice of mysticism in everyday life, with his art as the storyline.

Canvas + Clay provides an inclusive studio environment and gallery for artists of varying abilities to foster an authentic art practice and professional growth.
