As MARTA works on a massive renovation project at the East Lake Station, located at 2260 College Ave. in Decatur, officials are also calling on artists to help beautify the transport hub.
In late March, leaders of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) public art program—called Artbound—announced a call for artists to create designs for metal panels to be installed on the new north and south pedestrian bridges at East Lake Station.
The project provides an artist fee of $90,000 for the creation of the artwork, as well as consultation time with MARTA and project stakeholders on structural and safety aspects of realizing the work, stated officials. A shortlist of three to five artists will be compensated to provide design proposals after facilitated community engagement, then the selected artist will create a design that will be fabricated, produced, and installed by a third party hired by MARTA, according to officials.
Local artists are encouraged to apply to design metal panels for East Lake Station bridge, with applications due by April 17, states MARTA’s website.
Earlier in March, officials announced that the East Lake Station would undergo renovations for the replacement of two pedestrian bridges and to fix other amenities.
The new north pedestrian bridge is expected to be completed in October and will provide safer access to MARTA services, stated officials.
“This project is part of our focus on service, experience, and expansion,” said officials. “Once the work is complete, customers will have improved ADA accessibility with a new elevator and a cleaner, safer bridge with new flooring, lighting, and paint.”
Work on the new and improved south bridge will begin after the north bridge reopens in October, stated officials.
