MARSHALL, Mich. – After three years of barrels, lane closures and bridge detours, the Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) three-year, $210 million investment to rebuild I-69 between Island Highway in Charlotte, Eaton County, and I-94 in Marshall, Calhoun County, will be wrapping up this week.
The final stretches of new pavement and pavement markings were completed last week, and crews will be completing the paving of I-69 maintenance crossings this week, clearing the way to reopen all lanes, ramps and bridges before Thanksgiving.
Crews will be returning in 2024 to complete some bridge painting and deck epoxy sealing that was delayed by cold and wet weather in October, but the impact on motorists will be minimal.
Funding for this project was made possible by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Rebuilding Michigan program to rebuild the state highways and bridges that are critical to the state’s economy and carry the most traffic. The investment strategy is aimed at fixes that result in longer useful lives and improves the condition of the state’s infrastructure.
Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support nearly 2,541 jobs.
