New Honors Symposium at Ramona Convent Introduces Freshmen to Art Appreciation – Pasadena Schools

The Freshman Honors Humanities Symposium is a new yearlong project designed to push the strongest, most engaged freshmen students at Ramona Convent towards exploration of and appreciation for the arts. Each quarter, the students participating in the symposium will rotate through one of their four English teachers.

Each teacher will hold some type of event, discussion, or gathering as an opportunity for intellectual growth, investment in the arts, and community building. The group will be able to discuss engaging works, create intellectual community, and attend field trips to some of the best art spaces in Los Angeles.

Dr. Matthew Carrillo-Vincent, English Department Chair recently hosted the first quarter symposium. Students read and discussed Aristotle’s Poetics, a book about what makes good art and what makes beautiful art. Then the group supplemented their studies with a trip to the Getty Museum.

Ramona, celebrating a legacy of 134 years of distinction, is a welcoming Catholic college-prep high school for young women committed to excellence in education. Graduates are empowered, resilient, socially conscious leaders well prepared to meet the challenges of life as contributive members of the global community.
