A new scholarship will be available to art and design students at St. Clair County Community College.
The scholarship is named for SC4 alumna and interior designer Ellen Petho, who died on Jan. 2. To honor Ellen Petho’s love and devotion to the arts, her husband Lou Petho and their daughters donated $100,000 to SC4 on its 100th anniversary.
The donation will provide scholarship money to aspiring art students at SC4. The scholarship will be called the “Ellen Petho Design Ideas Memorial Scholarship.” Through this scholarship, Ellen’s passion for learning, art and design, and giving to others will live on as her legacy.
SC4 Chief Marketing Officer Kristen Copenhaver said the $100,000 donation will create an endowed scholarship, meaning it will provide scholarships from interest earnings. The $100,000 will remain in an account for investment while the earnings are used to assist students through scholarship awards.
“The amount of the scholarship awarded each year may vary depending on investment returns for the prior year,” Copenhaver said.
SC4 students soon can apply for the “Ellen Petho Design Ideas Memorial Scholarship” at sc4.edu/scholarships.
Ellen Petho called Port Huron her home for more than 75 years. She had a long and successful career in interior design, and devoted herself to philanthropic work. She earned her advertising and design degree from SC4 in 1988. SC4 was an integral part of Ellen’s education and the beginning of her design career.
