Arcata Artisans features work of 2 artists – Times-Standard

Betsy Roberts, metal arts and printmaking, and jeweler Mike Edwards are the featured artists for April at the Arcata Artisans Gallery, 883 H St., Arcata.

An Arts! Arcata reception takes place tonight, with the gallery staying open until 8 p.m.

This cooperative gallery features all local works by its 21 members. These painters, woodworkers, photographers, sculptors and ceramic and glass artists share the entire business operation. A member artist is always on hand to greet visitors and answer questions.

Roberts creates metal sculpture in the form of lamps, votive holders and jewelry, along with her printmaking and fabric work.

“My votive icons tell stories using personified powers from the world’s wisdom traditions,” Roberts said. “These include Raven, The Madonna or Kuan Yin, as well as personal myth, such as The Spirit of Elbow Grease. A simple iconic figure is embossed onto copper and a small shelf is created to hold a votive candle or another object of concentration, such as a crystal or some sage. Then, I selectively oxidize the bright copper to create unique patina images, which are then sealed to prevent further oxidation. These beings in metal take on a life of their own and speak to me. They are compelled to do things, so each new piece tells a tale.”

Edwards uses both cast and fabrication techniques in his metal work. He enjoys his bench time, especially the careful consideration of process when designing an object. He says that the highest compliment he can receive is to see his work being worn.
