Artists You Should Know: Los Blenders

Los Blenders dish out unfiltered and rollicking amalgamations of rock they bend and warp to match their clamorous energy. Since their arrival over a decade ago, the Mexican outfit has undergone various evolutions and growths. Their sound accommodates everything from raw garage and riotous punk to the sleek but heady psych-rock. You won’t want to miss them when they tear it up at El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday, February 17th, alongside Tropa Magica.

Formed in 2007 under the guidance of Alejandro Archundia (vocals/guitar), the band started cutting their teeth with live shows long before they started releasing music. Their 2011 debut EP, Oye, introduced them as vigorous and captivating rockers, threading the robust jangle of their live wire guitars through a haze of grimy sonics. It sizzles, crackles, and rowdily punctuates their madcap lust for getting people moving with their music.

Their first album, Chavos Bien, offered a full-length outlet for their jubilantly rambunctious bombardments of punchy rhythms. Tracks like “Playa Jacó” and “Yo Soy Punk” embody the delightfully rampant zeal that fuels their music. In 2018, they followed it with their sophomore record Ha Sido — a sublime foray into psychedelic soundscapes that lent itself to Los Blenders’ jittery and electrifying sound. The dizzying guitar lines of “Amor Prohibido II” and the throbbing drive of “Niña Surf” are two incredible standouts.

After appearing in a Corona ad alongside will.i.am and a 2017 slot at Coachella the band has only grown its following. Their third album Mazunte 2016 successfully entangled all their freewheeling genre exploits into a cohesive and downright enchanting collection of glimmering guitars, saturated reverb, and frenetic passion. In the aftermath of the pandemic, they dropped another EP in the form of Playa Privada, again expanding their tastes to include a mercurial but fiercely propulsive indie-rock.

If you haven’t yet caught wind of their newest single, “Unos Besos,” it’s the latest banger to be shared by Los Blenders. A jaunty rush of simmering guitars roiling beneath a layer of vocals — in the past, they’ve garnered comparisons to The Strokes, and this track proves those observations to be truthfully prescient.
