ALL RIGHT GRAB THE FLIP FLOP I LOVE THAT. WELL BERKS COUNTY ARTISTS WORKED ON A VERY UNIQUE CANVAS. A MURAL IN A LANCASTER HOME’S BATHROOM. ALL RIGHT, SO TAKE A LOOK AT THE BEFORE PICTURE HERE OF THIS MURAL THAT WAS PAINTED IN 1914 BY THE PREVIOUS HOMEOWNERS GRAND GRAND AUNT. IT WAS LABELED SCONSET 1914, WHICH IS AN AREA IN NANTUCKET, MASSACHUSETTS. BEAUTIFUL AREA ARTIST DEREK HETTINGER THEN GOT TO WORK AND HE HAD SOME HELP FROM ANOTHER ARTIST. THAT’S SEAN WARNER, AND THERE WAS A LOT OF PREPARATION WORK UNDERWAY, INCLUDING SANDING, PRIMING AND PATCHING. AND HE ALSO HAD TO REDRAW SOME MISSING AREAS FROM THE PAINTING AS WELL. AND AFTER THREE WEEKS OF WORK, SIX GALLONS OF PAINT. TAKE A LOOK AT THE RESTORED PICTURE. IT’S REALLY GREAT THAT YOU DON’T HAVE TO GIVE UP, THAT YOU CAN RESTORE IT, YOU KNOW, JUST LIKE THEY’VE DONE THE SISTINE CHAPEL, YOU KNOW? I MEAN, THERE ARE THINGS THERE’S SMOKE DAMAGE, WATER DAMAGE, THERE’S REAL THINGS AND THINGS GET, YOU KNOW, BROKEN AND DAMAGED AND ANYTHING BROKEN AND DAMAGE CAN BE REPAIRED. NOW, SOME OF THE PEOPLE IN THE MURAL ARE BELIEVED TO BE FAMILY MEMBERS OF THE ORIGINAL ARTIST. AND HENNINGER SAID SINCE THE ORIGINAL ARTIST DIDN’T SIGN THEIR NAME, THE PAINTERS WROTE RESTORED 2024, SO HOPEFULLY IN 100 YEARS OR SO, ANOTHER ARTIST
Berks County artist refurbishes 1914 Lancaster County bathroom mural

A Berks County artist worked on a unique canvas, a mural in a Lancaster County home’s bathroom. The mural was painted back in 1914 and labeled Sconset 1914, which is an area in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Artist Deric Hettinger began working on the piece along with help from fellow artist Schon (Sean) Wanner. There was a lot of preparation work, including sanding, priming and patching. He also had to redraw missing areas from the painting. After three weeks of work and six gallons of paint, he was finally finished.”It’s really great that you don’t have to give up, that you can restore it, you know? Just like they’ve done the Sistine Chapel, there are things like smoke damage, water damage, things get broken and damaged. But anything broken or damaged can be repaired,” Hettinger said. Some of the people in the mural are believed to be family members of the original artist. Hettinger also added that since the original artist did not sign their name, the painters wrote ‘restored 2024’ so that hopefully, in 100 years, another artist will do some research on who restored this mural.
