Call to Artists for Interactive Murals to Provide Joyful Moments

Brooksville Main Street is inviting artists to apply for the eighth round of their Mobile Mural program, but aside from giving creatives the opportunity to contribute to the landscape of downtown Brooksville, this particular round promises to give local residents the chance to become part of the art! Indeed, artists are now invited to create immersive works of art to befit the theme, “Snap & Soar: Interactive Murals for Joyful Moments.”

“Transform canvases into magical, interactive murals (such as mystical wings or playful backdrops) that will immerse viewers and encourage them to pose for photos!” invited a Call to Artists.

According to Allisa Babor, co-chair of the Brooksville Main Street design committee, a Hernando artist and his exquisite interactive work of art served as the inspiration for this round of mobile murals.

“For this round of mobile murals, we invite artists to create pieces of art that inspire and engage with the theme ‘Snap & Soar: Interactive Murals for Joyful Moments.’” explained Allisa Babor. “Murals in Brooksville and around the world that invite viewers to participate in the artwork, like Gary Duquette’s angel wings found on S Main Street, on a walkway down from The Bistro, and across from the Jennings building, served as inspiration for this series. Gary’s angel wings were painted in 2021 through the Brooksville Main Street mini mural series and served as inspiration for the theme for this round.”

Artists are encouraged to imbue their designs with imaginative and creative elements that will literally draw viewers into the completed work.

“Whether it is through mystical wings, playful backdrops, or other unique forms of interactive magic, you are invited to submit a proposal and be a part of this artistic journey for the next round of mobile murals,” said Babor.

Artists will be paid $12 per square foot ($420–$900) for their accepted “Snap and Soar” mural design. In addition, they will be given a booth at the unveiling event at the annual Mermaid Festival in Brooksville in February.

Sketches of mural design submissions are recommended but are not required for artists with a strong portfolio. The deadline to apply is Dec 1. For a full theme description and project details, learn more by visiting the Brooksville Main Street website: www.welovebvl.org/mm-call-to-artists.

“We are really excited to announce the call to artists for our eighth round of mobile murals!” said Barry Meindl, design committee co-chair of Brooksville Main Street. “We’ve been brainstorming for a little while now on a theme that encourages interactive murals, and with ‘Snap and Soar: Interactive Murals for Joyful Moments,’ we cannot wait to see how artists interpret and bring this theme to life.”

On Monday, Dec. 11, artists selected for the project will be notified and can pick up their tarps. Artists must drop off their completed tarps the week of Jan. 29. And on Feb. 10, a mural unveiling will be celebrated at the Mermaid Trail Festival.

“Brooksville Main Street is proud to provide our thriving arts community with paid opportunities and has paid $56,310 to local artists through the Mobile Mural Program,” said Mobile Mural Coordinator for Brooksville Main Street, Jessica Knutila. “Help us promote public art in Brooksville, and make sure your artist friends know about this opportunity to create a mural in our historic downtown area!”

Knutila looks forward to seeing artist interpretations of the “Snap and Soar” theme.
“We hope to see some creative interpretations of the “Snap & Soar” theme,” said Knutila, “and are excited to see beautiful, immersive murals that beg you to pose for a picture with them!”
