Built in 1928, the neo-classical building that is the Miami-Dade County Courthouse, is also known as “Cielito Lindo” (beautiful sky) in reference to the view those jailed saw from the jail which once existed on top of the building.
Now, the Miami-Dade County’s Department of Cultural Affair has a Call to Artists
for local, national, and international artists at all stages of their careers for the project Homage to Cielito Lindo.
Using a $30,000 budget, an artist will create an original work of art that commemorates and responds to the design features, architecture, history, aesthetics, community associations and historical narratives of the Miami-Dade County Courthouse, widely known as Cielito Lindo.
The artwork will be located on the 13th floor Ceremonial Courtroom of the new Civil and Probate Courthouse and installed on a wall with dimensions of approximately 30 feet in width by 10 feet in height.
The selected work of art is envisioned as a site-specific installation and / or mixed-media collage that draws inspiration from the historical context, community narratives and key events that transpired in and around the historic facility since the 1920’s.
The selected artists will have to be available to engage in the design process, complete and install the artwork on site by January 30, 2025.
