The Buena Vista Public Library’s first Community Talent Show brought six acts to the Legacy Stage on Saturday, June 22.
Spectators made the most of the shade on the hot Saturday morning, cheering on the performers. From a mini-musical performance of “Annie” to classical Spanish guitar, performers of all ages had a chance to share their creativity.
“It went really well overall,” said Kristina Martinez, library assistant and teen services lead. “This was our first year. Maggie Huyck (Buena Vista Event Cooperative) and Sharing Smith (Moonlighter Mobile Entertainment) helped so much with the entire process.”
Performers ranged in age from elementary school to adults.
“Beth Volpe, our Youth Services Coordinator, and local music teacher Kelly Pfeiffer were responsible for the wonderful mini-musical ‘Annie,’” Martinez said. “We also had several library volunteers who helped make this day possible.”
Though a few acts had to back out, Martinez said the number of performers was still a good fit. The show ran for two hours.
“If we do this again, I’d like to see more,” she said. “But it was a pretty good turnout, and there were more people there than I was expecting.”
In July, the library will host a drive-in movie night at the Comanche Drive-In, with free entry for library card holders, in partnership with the Salida Regional and Lake County libraries. They are also planning their Star Party for September, which will be hosted at the Kelly Ranch.
“It’s really fun being able to be super creative with our programming, talk to the community to see what they want and try to make it happen,” Martinez said. “We have a lot of freedom in program planning, and we have a lot of people who come to us who want to teach programs. It makes it very varied and we have a lot of attendance, which is great. It shows us that people want to be here, want to do these things.”
