eastern Iowa artists “Rock the Chalk” in downtown Iowa City

Artists from across eastern Iowa gathered in downtown Iowa City on Friday to “rock the chalk“.

The eighth annual Rock the Chalk filled three of the city’s block with chalk drawings to help celebrate the arts. Those drawings were span along Washington Street and Linn Street near the Iowa City Public Library.

Iowa’s News Now spoke withSarah Alward, who lives in Iowa City, to talk about what brought her out to Rock the Chalk.

“My first year, I came with my friend, Carlina, who’s with the children’s museum this year,” said Alward. “We worked on a piece together and then last year, my mom and I teamed up, and we did a piece with mice in it and this year, we went with a Japanese Koiraporiti.”

The festival first started back in 2016 when MidWestOne Bank was making renovations to their headquarters building. Since then, it became a yearly celebration of the arts — and community — in the Iowa City area.
