GOOD HART — The Good Hart Artist Residency recently announced its selection of 15 creatives who will stay in Good Hart between June 2024 and May 2025, bringing a wide range of arts experiences to the community.
In total, 529 applications were sent to the Good Hart Artist Residency, a nonprofit that provides time and space for artists, writers and composers to live for 10-21 days in Northern Michigan and concentrate on their craft.
According to a press release from the program, while artists are in residence, they each provide an arts experience for the local community, which can range from workshops in local schools to art-themed hikes and more. These events are put on in partnership with over a dozen local nonprofits.
Already on the schedule is a nature-themed writing workshop at the Petoskey District Library, a songwriting workshop for women, an art class for senior citizens using inspiration from their memories, a class for high school students on how to film a documentary and an artist talk and painting workshop focused on accessibility and inclusion. Open studio events will take place starting at 10 a.m. at the residency on June 15, 2024, Oct. 12,2024 and May 17, 2025.
The May 2024 resident, composer Susan Mayo, will lead a night hike at the Headlands International Dark Sky Park in partnership with the Little Traverse Conservancy at 9 p.m. on May 15. The hike will be followed by a short performance by Mayo at the Waterfront Event Center. The event is free but participants should register at landtrust.org.
“Our past artists, writers and composers have enriched this community through such a variety of experiential arts activities such learning about Japanese culture and Taiko drumming for 3rd graders, jazz workshops at the high school, winter forest bathing, leather stamping at the farmers market, writing workshops focusing on women’s voices and so much more,” said executive director and founder Sue Klco in a press release. “We are excited to see what this new group of residents will bring to this community over the next year.”

The selected residents include: Painter Genevieve Ramos of Chicago in June 2024; writers Ellen Stone and Ashwini Bhasi of Ann Arbor in June 2024; filmmaker Lydia Cornett of Brooklyn, New York in July 2024; woodworker Alexa Allen of Boulder, Colorado in July 2024; visual artist Bakpak Durden of Detroit in August 2024; poet Kaecey McCormick of the San Francisco Bay area in September 2024; visual artist Amanda Maciuba of Buffalo, New York in October 2024; writer Claire Hodgdon of Brooklyn, New York in November 2024; composer Victor Marquez-Barrios of Venezuela (currently residing in Missouri) in December 2024; composer Jilaine Wheatcroft of Oxford, UK in January 2025; writer Ciara Alfaro of Lubbock, Texas in February 2025; visual artist Sasha-Loriene McClain of Maryland in March 2025; visual artist Robbin Légère Henderson of the San Francisco Bay area in April 2025; and visual artist Jonathan Gitelson of Keene, New Hampshire in May 2025.
