Indian artists discovered over 11.2 bn times by first-time listeners in 2024: Spotify report | Technology News


It seems local artists continue to dominate Spotify India’s daily top 50 playlist. The newly released Loud and Clear report by the music streaming platform revealed that in 2024 alone, artists from India were discovered 11.2 billion times by first-time listeners on the platform. According to the report, this is a 13 per cent increase when compared to 2023.

The company said that through artist education initiatives, emerging artist programmes, on-ground experiences, and more, the platform has been connecting artists with their fans more deeply than ever before. The report also shows how artists earn money through streaming and distribution of royalties and highlights the rapidly evolving global music landscape.

The streamer has been consistently contributing to the artist economy in India. The company said that since 2022, the number of Indian artists generating over Rs 50 lakh in royalties from Spotify alone has more than doubled. Similarly, in the same period, Indian artists generating over Rs 1 crore in royalties have more than tripled, and over Rs 5 crore have doubled. The report said that two-thirds of the royalties generated in India in 2024 came from Indian artists.

Indian artists thriving

According to the report, over 90 per cent of the tracks featured on Spotify India’s daily top 50 playlist in 2024 were by local artists, an increase of 6 per cent compared to 2023. Furthermore, nearly 50 per cent of all royalties generated by Indian artists on Spotify in 2024 were from listeners from outside India, up from 40 per cent. Indian languages were streamed in the USA, the UK, the UAE, Pakistan, Canada, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. Also, over 9,000 Indian artists were added to global and local editorial playlists on the platform in 2024.

When it comes to languages, royalties generated by Indian artists who were performing in Hindi, Tamil, Punjabi, and Telugu have more than doubled since 2021. Telugu has emerged as one of the fastest growing in popularity in 2024, with a 39 per cent increase in royalties generated globally year-on-year, more than doubling since 2021. Among these languages, the most-streamed genres include Punjabi hip hop, Hindi hip hop, Malayalam hip hop, Punjabi pop, Tamil pop, Hindi pop, Hindi indie, etc.

According to the report, in 2023 the global growth of music from India was led by artists like Arijit Singh, Shreya Ghoshal, Pritam, Anirudh Ravichander, Diljit Dosanjh, Karan Aujla, Hanumankind, Kalmi, A.R. Rahman, Sidhu Moose Wala, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Vishal Shekhar, AP Dhillon, Badshah, and Alka Yagnik.

Globally, Spotify continues to dominate the music industry when it comes to payouts. The company has distributed over $10 billion in music royalties in 2024 alone. This is a tenfold rise in the last 10 years. The company has now paid out around $60 billion since its inception.
