Katonah Young Artists Exhibition – Pelham Examiner

A group of 11 Pelham Memorial High School senior art students displayed their work at the Katonah Art Museum’s annual Young Artists Exhibition, which is in its 41st year. The display highlighted 365 pieces by high school students from 43 schools across Fairfield, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties.

“I used a painting from my AP Art portfolio about my childhood—a beach that I used to go to in Brazil, San Pedro,” said senior Catarina Gomes. “This is where I shared some of the best memories of my life.”

A group of PMHS students also helped curate the exhibit. They set up the art with the help of teacher Devon Fallon.

“Being able to see the wall of art after we finished it was incredible, as it was really fun to curate the pieces that went in the exhibit, which made this experience super personal to me,” said junior Elena Getz. “It was very interesting being able to see all the different kinds of art. Every medium, color and idea was displayed that day, and it was really fun and eye opening to see that.”

“We went around the museum hand picking pieces, and we made sure to have a color scheme in mind as well so our wall looked put together,” said senior Kathryn Kuznetsov. “We used a hammer and nails to install the pieces on the wall.”

The exhibition ran from Feb. 11 to March 4. With the help of museum staff, the students were able to assume the role of artist, graphic designer, curator, exhibition designer and installer.

“We got to see art from other schools, meet new people, develop a theme for the wall we hung art on and use tools to hang them, which taught me a lot about curating,” said junior Katherine Connolly.
