The City of Kansas City is currently looking for artists to develop a piece in the Waldo neighborhood for a surface parking lot and streetscape project. The project’s art piece, a 32’ circle, will be displayed on 75th and Wornall as a part of the Kansas City, Missouri One Percent for Art Program.
Local KC artists are encouraged to apply and contribute to the $250,000 project. The artwork is scheduled to be installed in the late summer of 2025, and the search for the artists has officially begun. The deadline for applicants is July 19, and semi-finalists will be notified if they made the cut by the end of the month.
The two to five semi-finalists who the panelists feel best fit the criteria—with attributes of excellence, durability, experience, and appropriateness—will advance to the next stage of the project. Those selected will then propose designs for the piece and receive a $3,750 work stipend, even if their design isn’t selected.
The selected design is expected to begin assembly in early 2025 and finally be completed by that fall, with a dedication ceremony quickly after installation.
Resumes, work samples, and residency information all need to be uploaded through the online portal. Only U.S. citizens over the age of 18 will be accepted, and though it’s a nationwide application, KC area artists are preferred. A minimum of five images must be submitted, but no more than 10. Up to three videos are accepted as well. The website linked here contains all the specifications potential artists need to secure their spot in the applicant pool.
