Kinetic artist Jordan Vinyard is intrigued by the alchemizing effects of technology on humanity. Her exhibit “Command + C, Command + C, Command + C” consists of kinetic sculptures, multimedia installations and video/performance that intentionally create physical gaps for viewers.
From empty benches to installed reactionary sensors, machines appear to pathetically wait for humanity to return. Vinyard’s exhibition opens at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2 at the Tulsa Artists’ Coalition Gallery at 9 E. Reconciliation Way and runs until Saturday, Aug. 24.
Vinyard is the dean of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. She has traveled internationally with her work, including exhibiting in Narva, Estonia; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; and South Korea.
“I’m particularly excited about TAC because of the industrial aesthetics and exposed vents,” Vinyard said. “I very intentionally try to find spaces that have that quality because it dramatically emphasizes the mechanical nature of the work.” Pieces in the exhibit have exposed electronics, wires, microcontrollers and sensors that are integral to the works.

Vinyard said the exhibit is about reestablishing the virtue of the physical body. ”I believe technology can be utilized to re-humanize by prompting an audience to begin asking not, ‘What is that thing doing?’ but rather, ‘What am I doing that makes that thing do what it’s doing?’” Vinyard, a native of Mustang, also directs the Art Wrecker Gallery in Chickasha.
The music of John Beauchamp and Trish Davis will be featured at the opening of “Command + C, Command + C, Command + C.” The exhibit is free and open to the public. For more information: jordanvinyard.com
