Laredo seeking local artists for bridge mural, offering up to $15K

The City of Laredo is offering a stipend of up to $15,000 for contributing to a mural through a partnership with District III Councilmember Alyssa Cigarroa and UP Art Studio in the Lafayette Street Overpass Public Art Project.

The project is aiming to implement artwork on the 17 columns and beams of the overpass so it can become “an artistic gateway linking Lafayette Park, the vibrant Las Canta Ranas neighborhood and the Jose A. Valdez Jr. Baseball Park.”

To complete the project, the city is searching for artists who either reside in Laredo or have a deep connection to the city. The artists will be tasked with contributing a unique vision and creativity to the project. The city said it will give special consideration to any artists who reside within the Las Canta Ranas neighborhood.

In order to be eligible for participation, an artist must be over 18 and legally able to work in the country. They must also have documented experience with at least three large-scale mural project in the past three years and demonstrate proficiency in painting murals over 12-feet high utilizing lifts or scaffolding.

The mural will begin being implemented in March 2024. The stipend, funded by the City of Laredo, could be up to $15,000 but is dependent on the final scale of the project. The stipend is intended to cover both the artist’s time for implementing the project and community engagement.

Applications for the project are due by Friday, Jan. 12. Applications are available online at https://bit.ly/CallForArtistsLaredo.
