The New Hampshire Art Association (NHAA) and the Portsmouth Historical Society present the “Matter of Memory,” an exhibition opening April 5. This collaborative showcase will illustrate how the people of Portsmouth have reconstructed their visions of the past through the treasures they have saved and displayed. The exhibition will feature a diverse collection of contemporary artworks, which will provide a dynamic juxtaposition of historical and modern interpretations. Artists are invited to submit works for the show by Feb 4th for consideration.
“Matter of Memory” celebrates the multifaceted nature of memory, inviting local and regional artists to respond to the poignant questions posed by the exhibition that explore how we consciously and unconsciously create stories through memory. The show is subdivided into various groupings devoted to specific themes connected with the creation and perpetuation of memory. It will explore how objects, whether family heirlooms or souvenirs, play a vital role in shaping individual and societal interpretations of the past.
The first floor will showcase historical art and artifacts, offering a glimpse into how individuals in Portsmouth have reconstructed their own visions of the past. Objects, both newly found and recently rediscovered, will highlight memories told less often in the past, creating a community genealogy.
The second floor will feature a contemporary gallery where artists are encouraged to submit works that provide a modern perspective on memory and remembrance. The exhibition, held in collaboration with the NHAA, will complement the historical narratives on the first floor. The selected contemporary artworks will explore themes connected with the creation and perpetuation of memory through the preservation and interpretation of objects.
