Mother, daughter artists Jen and Elizabeth Casad open art exhibit, May 3

ROCKLAND — Experience the unique blend of past and present through the lenses of Jen and Elizabeth Casad, a mother and daughter duo, Friday, May 3, 2024, from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m., at Badhus Co., 25 Oak St., Rockland.

“This art opening promises to be a celebration of talent, family, and the beauty of Maine,” said Badhus Co., in a news release.

Jen Casad, a commercial fisherman and artist, brings the rich history and current reality of Maine to life through her realistic drawings. Her work, including the iconic portrayal of a clam digger in Sharon Lockhart’s film Double Tide (2009), reflects a deep connection to Maine’s fishing industry.

“As a first-generation Mainer with a lineage of fishermen and artists, Casad’s drawings beautifully capture the nostalgic essence of the past, the challenges of seasonal income, landscapes, and the hardworking people,” said Badhus.

Notably, her work is showcased at the Alexandre Gallery in New York, specializing in contemporary American artists and early 20th-century American artists, with a focus on the Stieglitz Group. She received a BA in Art from the University of Maine.

Elizabeth Sylvia Casad, at just 12 years old, is already making waves in the art world. Living on a small farm on the coast of Maine, Elizabeth, daughter of Jen Casad, draws inspiration from the strength of women in connection to animals and nature.

“Homeschooled and with a passion for voice and pottery, Elizabeth’s paintings and drawings beautifully portray the powerful bond between women and the natural world,” said Badhus.

Jen Casad shared her thoughts on her art and life, saying, “Drawing has that same type of rhythmic meditative flow as does the physical work of clamming. It is someplace I can be where the rest of the world tunnels out and time seems to disappear. The largest and best part of my life is being a mother to my beautiful, fun, exciting, and loving daughter.”

Elizabeth Sylvia Casad expressed her love for farm life, saying, “I have always made art probably because of my mother. She is an artist and the best mom in the whole wide world. I like to sing also. I absolutely love to sing.”
