Philippe Parreno appointed Artistic Director of 2025 edition – Announcements


Philippe Parreno has been appointed the Artistic Director for Okayama Art Summit 2025.

The Okayama Art Summit Executive Committee appointed Philippe Parreno as the Artistic Director for Okayama Art Summit 2025, the international contemporary art exhibition which is held every 3 years in Okayama City, Japan, at its General Meeting held on October 24, 2023. 

In addition, Shimabuku has been appointed as the Artistic Translator by Parreno. Parreno emphasized the importance of the new role of an “Artistic Translator” who shares the sense of the exhibition concept, in order to connect it with others. He recognized Shimabuku’s familiarity with the direction of the artistic world and their existing relationship. 

Artistic Director: Philippe Parreno

Artist; born 1964 in Algeria. Currently living and working in Paris. He is highly acclaimed for his work across a variety of media including films, carving, drawings, and text.

His recent major exhibitions are Marilyn (Espace Louis Vitton, Munchen, 2023), Echo2: a Carte Blanche to Philippe Parreno (Rotunda of the Bourse de Commerce, Pinault Collection in Paris, 2022), La Quinta del Sordo (The Prado Museum, Madrid, 2022), and A Manifestation of Objects, (Watari Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, 2019-2020), etc.

In addition to the above, many exhibitions have been held at various major art museums and galleries in countries such as Europe, the United States, Japan, and South Korea, as well as other Asian countries.

Artistic Translator: Shimabuku 

Artist; born in Kobe, Japan 1969. Currently based in Naha, Japan and working worldwide.

From the beginning of the 1990s, he has travelled to various places in Japan and overseas, creating performances and installations that consider the daily lives and cultures of people he encounters, as well as new forms of communication. He also works in a diverse range of media including sculpture, film and photography. Full of poetic sentiment and humor while also inspiring people in metaphorical ways, his style has gained a worldwide reputation.

Okayama Art Summit is an international exhibition of contemporary art which is held every 3 years in Okayama city, Japan and the first exhibition was held in 2016. Various historical and cultural facilities in the area around Okayama Castle and Okayama Korakuen Garden have been the venues for exhibiting works by world-class contemporary artists.
