Photos: West central Minnesota artists display their talent at six area studios during 2025 Studio Hop – West Central Tribune


WILLMAR — Eighteen artists put their talent on display at studios and businesses in Willmar, New London and Svea on Friday and Saturday during the annual Studio Hop art crawl.

From DEMO Inc. in Svea, which hosted multimedia artist Monica Villars and mixed media collage artist Pauline Donahue, to the Little Theatre Auditorium in New London, which hosted five artists — Rachel Gaasterland, acrylic and clay; Harry Mortensen, multimedia; Saint Mortensen, multimedia; Ana Serrano, paintings; and Jenny Danielson, paintings — west central Minnesotans were invited to browse the art available for sale and strike up a conversation with the artists themselves.

The Barn Theatre in downtown Willmar hosted eight of the participating artists: Jessalyn Canavan, pottery; Elaine and Paul Hagen, watercolor paintings, photography and small wood items; Karen Kaufenberg, photography; Nan Karr Kaufenberg, linoleum block prints with watercolor; Dona Larkin, acrylic paintings; Keith Petersen, acrylic and oil paintings; Kathy Peterson, pencil, watercolor and mixed media.

Next door, at Intuition Brewing Co., Fernando Alvarado set up a display for his rock-wrapping art.

And two Willmar-based artists — woodcut printmaker, children’s book author and painter Don Houseman, and scratchboard artist Shalese Sands — opened up their home studios to the public for the weekend event.

Studio Hop guests were invited to visit each of the six locations for a chance to be entered in a drawing for a grand prize, and those who visited four were entered into a drawing for a smaller prize.

The annual Studio Hop is managed by the Willmar Area Arts Council. The council, formed in 1997, has advocated, sponsored and held various exhibits, projects and events to build a vibrant artistic community in the region.
