Portland is indeed a hub of creativity. There is always something interesting to see or hear, including live performance at venues large and small. A reimagined Keller in the heart of downtown on the historic award-winning Portland Open Space Sequence affirms Portland’s civic and cultural vitality, as does the existence of the many smaller venues noted by Joni Whitworth, (“Opinion: Fund artists, not auditoriums,” Nov. 5).
But saying we should directly fund artists instead of auditoriums is false dichotomy, and a siloed way of thinking.
Maybe the arts in Portland are eco-system, a garden, that needs renewal and tending. Money is part of the tending. But showing up in real time and place for artists in venues large and small: That is the real Portland way. And that is how the hub of creativity holds.
