Revitalizing Romig: Decades-Old Mural Receives Artistic Update by Alaskan Artists | Homepage

A decades-old mural at one middle school in Anchorage is getting a nice refresh.

The Romig Trojan has proudly stood at the entrance to Romig Middle School for the past 50 years. But its age is showing.

Art teacher Allison Little, Alaskan artist Natalie Rei Oathout, and a group of art students came up with a plan and a design to update the mural.

Your Alaska Link found them hard at work today with paintbrushes in hand.

“It feels good. It feels like we’re leaving our mark on the school before we leave,” said Romig Middle School Student Hella Crosby.

“It’s like class gifts. Leaving things behind for the next kids who are going to come in,” added student Harper Forbes.

“A lot of people don’t know that the school is back here, so giving some punch so that people driving by will say hey that’s a school I need to notice,” said artist Natelie Rei Oathout.

The hope is to have the mural project all finished at Romig before school’s out for the summer.
