28 months on from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the war shows no sign of abating soon. It also continues to spark moderation issues for digital services of all kinds – music included. Spotify has removed songs and profiles by a group of pro-war Russian artists this month, according to the Moscow Times.
Lyube, Grigory Leps, Oleg Gazmanov, Shaman and Polina Gagarina are among those taken down by the platform according to the report, which notes that these five artists are all under EU sanctions.
“Platform Rules clearly state that we take action when we identify content which explicitly violates our content policies or local laws,” said Spotify’s spokesperson. “Upon review, these artists met the threshold for removal.” You can read Spotify’s platform rules here.
Rather than being classed as dangerous or deceptive content, we suspect the key part is the ‘illegal content’ section in the rules, covering “content that does not comply with applicable sanctions and export regulations” and “content that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act of any kind”.
