Spotify has been breaking down its latest Loud & Clear payout stats geographically this month: for example its UK data published last week.
Nigeria is another country getting some official figures from the streaming service. Spotify says that it paid out more than 25bn naira ($16.8m at current exchange rates) for music by Nigerian artists in 2023.
That’s up from more than 11bn naira in 2023, so a year-on-year increase of 127.3%. As ever, these payouts are to the rightsholders for those artists, with the amount making its way to the musicians depending on their contracts.
Spotify also said that the number of Nigerian artists earning more than 10m naira ($6.7k) a year has quadrupled since 2018, with more than half of those royalties going to independent artists and labels.
