The Ector County Coliseum in Odessa has seen some really big acts come through its doors over the years. Did you know Elvis played there not too long before he died? Artists of all genres have graced the stage. From Elvis to Johnny Cash and Poison to George Strait, all have made stops in Odessa. I can remember as a kid going to see George Strait and the traffic down 42nd being at a standstill because of all the cars trying to get to the coliseum.
Now that we are losing so many of our legends I think we should take the time to celebrate the artists that have played here. Back in the day artists just played everywhere. Not too many of them became too big to not play certain places. But now so many more people attend concerts and with the help of social media artist get so big so fast.
Before the internet, people used to have to stand in line to buy tickets for upcoming concerts. I remember when Garth Brooks played the coliseum; people camped out for days hoping to purchase tickets. You could camp out and stand in line, with no guarantee of getting a ticket.
The first concert my mom let me go to with my friends without adult supervision was Clay Walker and Kenny Chesney in 1998. At the time Kenny Chesney was opening for Clay Walker.
These aren’t all of the big names to play at Ector County Coliseum, but they are some of the biggest. Below is a list of some of the greatest musical acts that have played the Coliseum and their years there.
