Usher says 2024 Super Bowl Halftime Show will honor Black R&B artists

Usher can’t wait for R&B music to get the spotlight it deserves during his upcoming 2024 Super Bowl Halftime Show

The “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love” singer told Good Morning America on Friday that he’ll be carrying the spirit of all the Black artists who paved the way before him when he takes the Super Bowl stage on Feb. 11.

“It’s a major thing for me,” Usher said. “I think about what our country has kind of represented for Black artists, you know, having to at some point go through kitchens to even be able to perform for an audience, but they had to leave back through that same door, fear for their lives as they went to the next state to do the same thing. So I’m coming through the front door with this one.”

He added that he’s been thinking about “all of the R&B performers who I carry in this moment,” noting that his own success has come from the love and support of others throughout his career.

“I didn’t start where I am now, and I didn’t get there by myself,” he explained. “So, everybody that has been a part of it, I’m carrying them with me. All of my fans, my loved ones, the people who may have felt like they have been forgotten, they haven’t. I’m carrying you right with me when I walk on that stage that night.”

A collection of other artists including Reba McEntire, Post Malone, Andra Day, and Tiesto will also be performing at the event. McEntire will handle the national anthem, Post Malone will sing “America the Beautiful,” and Day will perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Tiesto will serve as the game’s first-ever official in-game DJ.

The Super Bowl will air Sunday, Feb. 11 on CBS and stream on Paramount+. Watch Usher discuss his upcoming performance in the GMA clip above.
