YOUNGSTOWN — Art and creativity were in full display as the Butler Institute of American Art hosted its second annual young artists exhibit, celebrating National Youth Art Month with a showcase of student artwork. An estimated 270 pieces from students in kindergarten through sixth grade, along with 37 art teachers from 46 schools in Mahoning, Trumbull, and Columbiana counties, highlighted the talents of young artists and the importance of art education.
Unleashing Creativity Through Art
The exhibit, which took place on a sunny Sunday afternoon, was not just about displaying art; it was about celebrating the creative spirit of children. Among the standout pieces was a clay sculpture of breakfast, cleverly crafted by Evvi McKee, a Boardman Center Intermediate School sixth-grader, who added an honorable mention award to her artistic achievements. This piece, representing a slice of bacon, an egg, and a waffle arranged to resemble a face, underscored the exhibit’s theme of thinking outside the box and incorporating unique elements into traditional subjects.
Inspiring Future Artists
Art teachers played a pivotal role in nurturing these young talents. Lori Szoke, Evvi’s art teacher, praised her student’s precision and attention to detail. The exhibit also served as a platform for students like Jordan Blasko, a St. Christine School sixth-grader, who expressed her faith through art, and Mira Greenwalt, a second-grader who captivated attendees with her vibrant autumn landscape. These young artists, through their dedication and creativity, are a testament to the power of art education in shaping the minds and hearts of students.
