What Is Modernism?: Post-Impressionism, Cubism, and the Readymade

Thursday, July 11 | 6:00–7:30

Class/Workshop

Marcel Duchamp

What should a work of art look like? What function should a work of art and the artist serve in society? These questions have long been debated, but the early 20th century marked a pivotal change in how artists and their audiences answered them. In a few short decades, long-held assumptions and standards about art shifted completely across Europe and the United States.

In the first session of this free three-session program, participants will learn about major innovations in European art and the international influences that inspired them.

“What is Modernism?” is a free, three-week class introducing participants of any experience level to the histories, stories, and ideas expressed in the Art Institute collection. This is the first of three sessions.
