Study: Athens Among Top 10 European Hotspots for Art Lovers

Athens has been ranked as a top hotspots for art lovers, according to Ubuy France’s research on the top 20 best European cities for travelers who love art.

The company investigated the number of art galleries, the number of art galleries that offer free entry, the number of statues and monuments, and the number of pieces of street art in each European country’s capital city. For the research, the experts used the travel reviews website Street Art Cities to find the galleries as well as the monuments and statues.

The Greek capital scored 135 points, featuring 59 galleries, with 10 of them offering free entry. There are also 67 sculptures and monuments to be found around the city, as well as 526 works of street art.

“The National Gallery of Greece, found in Athens, is home to a huge range of Greek and European art from medieval to contemporary,” the experts said.

“The Institute of Contemporary Greek Art is dedicated to art from the country from the 1940s onwards, showing the rich variety of work by Greek artists over the years; the institute runs workshops and seminars as well, where art lovers can come to learn and take part in discussions.”

London and Paris top first place

In joint first place, London and Paris are the top European cities for art enthusiasts.

London scored a total of 166 points and has 259 galleries, of which 29 are free. The British capital is also home to 347 monuments and statues, while it has 441 works of street art around the city.

Meanwhile, Paris features 198 galleries, of which 11 offer free entry. In addition, there are an enormous number of monuments and statues around the city, 796, as well as 637 works of street art to discover.

Among the other cities on the Top 10 list are Prague, Berlin, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Rome, Vienna, Budapest, Madrid, and Oslo.

According to a recent report from the vape company Haypp, Athens is also the best smelling city in the world due to the number of bakeries, flower shops, and perfumeries in the city.
