After having spent around fifty years in a dimly lit, cloistered flat, the Shahs had a simple yet non-negotiable vision for their new Mumbai home. They wanted an airy space flooded with natural light—open, expansive, and unrestricted—a true luxury in the Maximum City. Farheen Nanji and Naasish Nanji Reshamwala of FN Design Studio ran with this brief they were entrusted with, and the result is an interior made truly capacious through materials, hues, and shapes that enhance a feeling of airiness, letting the flow of sunlight guide the design.

The lounge showcases an elegant tapestry of colours and textures that come together to create a cohesive, glamorous interior. However, the true pièce de résistance is the remarkable pool table, complete with stunning a gold leaf base. Alongside it, a textured marble centre table sits next to a faux fireplace crafted from the same stone, evoking the charm of traditional European residences. Olive and sienna-toned seating adds a hint of colour to the space, while a rug from Rosetta Carpets introduces textural nuance. Sculptural wall art by Prityanshi Shah enhances the decor. Overhead, ornate chandeliers illuminate the room, and decorative accents from Claymen, HM Home, and Address Home complete the look. The lounge exudes a subtle neoclassical sensibility, setting it apart from the rest of the home.

In contrast to the unmistakably glamorous lounge, the living room emerges as a sanctuary inspired by the openness of Bali villas. Within an interior swathed in shades of white and beige, wooden accents and natural textures create a welcoming, homely ambiance. An accent light by Kaleido Wall hangs from the ceiling, alongside a compelling work of art by Kippi Leonard via Calcuttan. A set of sculptural accent chairs serves as an interesting visual highlight, offsetting a timeless ecru sofa. A neutral rug from Rugberry lines the floor.

The dining area and bar feature a stunning monochrome sensibility.
Monochrome, high gloss, and wholly opulent—the dining area and bar take on a life of their own. Unique dining chairs are paired with a curved table crafted from solid black marble lined with white veins. This elegant setting is balanced by a custom marble bar, meticulously crafted from rare Calacatta Viola marble. Dusty mauve bar chairs add a hint of colour to the otherwise black-and-white frame.
The clients’ desire to infuse their heritage from Patan, Gujarat, found expression in a custom-made, intricately hand-painted wallpaper by Design by Metamorph.

The master bedroom epitomizes a harmonious blend of cultures. This remarkable wallpaper showcases a UNESCO World Heritage site and the Patan Patola, a double ikkat textile handwoven by local artisans, among other meaningful details for the family. Curved furniture adds a sense of softness to the bedroom. A spacious walk-in wardrobe with coloured glass shutters and stark monochromatic tiles is designed as a self-contained world of opulence.

This distinctive Mumbai home is ultimately an effortless balance between the clients’ individual tastes and the designers’ sensibilities, with unbridled space as the common denominator.
