Statement
During this project, and typically in my general illustration practice, I heavily borrow from golden-age illustrators and lifestyle illustrations of the 60s and 70s. In this era of illustration, flat filling and use of texture was king, and I attempted to reflect and borrow from this sensibility throughout each piece. I also tried to experiment with contrasting areas with high degrees of modelling with areas that have little to no modelling. In my work, I am always interested in juxtaposition; whether that be through color, line, or shape. In my work in general, elegant use of lyrical, and elegant lines is extremely important to me, and I take a great deal of inspiration from naturally occurring shape and lines usually found in flowers, vines, and trees.
Thematically, I was majorly focused on creating images with a high/dark fantasy theme, but I also was interested in trying each together with secondary themes, usually with celestial imagery, flowers, or light in general. It was important to me that each illustration strongly evoked some kind of emotional story that would not have to be explicitly told to be understood. A sense of timelessness and universality of theme and motif was extremely important for me during this process because of it.
