INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indy Latina Artists beginning Friday will present a visual art exhibit designed to celebrate the act of being bold, and dedicated to Women’s History Month in March.
The Atrevida exhibit will showcase collaborative pieces from 12 Indianapolis women artists who come from Latino countries. An organizer says each artist expressed a unique take on what it means to be bold.
Mirvia Sol Eckert is co-founder of Indy Latina Artists. “Women must be as assertive as possible because of the political climate. We have to let them know we’re here. We can also tell the visual stories of our lives on canvas or wherever. I mean, that, for me, is telling them we’re here to stay.”
“The art exhibition celebrates the bold, assertive, intrepid women who continue to pave the way and leave a lasting impression. With our bold art and the colors, March was a perfect time to do it.”
“My art specifically, I’m from Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. So, my art has a lot of the hot Caribbean colors. It’s always in there, whether I do something that’s not about Puerto Rico. As artists, we always have a unique piece in our artwork.”
Pattern, a nonprofit dedicated to fostering Indiana’s creative economy and uplifting diverse artists, will host the free exhibit through March 28 in its gallery at The Stutz, 1600 N. Capitol Ave.
Salma Taman, community outreach manager for Pattern, said while inside the gallery, “I think that just by looking around, I can see that many different media was used. We have collages, acrylic on canvas, oil on canvas, and resin. We even have a little bit of sculpting. We have a sculpture made out of chicken wire.”
About the gallery, Taman said, “We are hoping to host as many diverse shows here as possible to give all the communities, underrepresented or not, a chance to express themselves freely.”
