The college will cut the ribbon on the $21.7 million center Dec. 6 during a grand opening event.

The center, which will begin hosting classes next semester, includes a 338-seat mainstage theater with an orchestra pit, 100-seat black box theater, art gallery, art studio, and lobby with LED video walls. The project was part of the college’s 2014 voter-approved bond package but experienced delays due to supply chain and weather-related issues.

Lone Star College Chancellor Mario K. Castillo said in a news release that the new center will ensure students and community members will have a place to grow and learn.

“The addition of the Visual and Performing Arts Center to the Lone Star College-University Park campus is a testament to the unwavering commitment of Lone Star College to educational excellence and community enrichment,” Castillo said in a statement.

The new facility will join the Energy & Manufacturing Institute and the Center for Science & Innovation as one of the campus’ three field-focused centers representing “a holistic approach to academic excellence,” the release details.

The grand opening will include guided tours of the center, speeches by community leaders including State Representative Sam Harless, and a student performance of “A Christmas Carol” radio play.

“The VPA is more than a building; it’s a bridge connecting our students to the global stage and stands as a testament to our belief in equitable access to the arts.” LSC-University Park President Virginia M. Fraire said in a statement. “It promises to be a cornerstone of cultural enrichment and a platform for students of diverse backgrounds to engage with the world through the universal language of the arts.”
