The subject of the evening is the Transcontinental Railroad — the people who built it and the communities impacted by it. The railroad connected to L.A. in 1876 and triggered the growth of our region.
In addition to music, there will be a discussion led by best-selling author Lisa See. Her great-great-grandfather worked on the Transcontinental Railroad as described in her memoir, On Gold Mountain.
The program includes performances by Giddens, Wu Man, Haruka Fujii and guest artist Pura Fé — all well-known and highly-regarded. Silkroad was founded by Yo-Yo Ma in 1998 as a model for exchanging ideas, tradition and innovation across borders.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Rhiannon Giddens is a two-time Grammy Award winning folk singer and songwriter. She won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Music with Michael Abels for the opera Omar about enslaved people brought to America from Muslim countries. She has released several albums of critically-praised music, appeared on the hit show Nashville and was profiled in the New Yorker. She is the artistic director of Silkroad.
Lisa See grew up in and resides in L.A. Her great-grandfather Fong See was known as the godfather of the city’s Chinatown and the patriarch of a sprawling family. Her books have been celebrated for their deeply researched stories about Chinese characters and cultures. Images from the Lisa See Collection, The Huntington, San Marino, CA are part of the Metro Art exhibition, Where You Stand: Chinatown 1880 to 1939 (你所處的位置: 唐人街 1880 年至 1939 年) in the Union Station Waiting Room Gallery.
Wu Man is recognized as the world’s premier pipa virtuoso — the pipa is a lute-like instrument with a 2,000 year history. She has given the pipa a new role in traditional and contemporary music and has been featured on NPR’s Tiny Music concert series.
Haruka Fujii is one of the most prominent solo percussionists and marimbists of her generation. She has performed with the Silkroad Ensemble since 2010 and has played with the San Francisco Symphony, Munich Philharmonic, Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and many others.
Pura Fé (Tuscarora/Taino) is an Indigenous activist, singer-songwriter and storyteller known for her soulful vocals and for breathing life into several musical genres. Her work as a musician has brought her around the world for festivals, benefits, in classrooms, online and in the studio.
