VANDERBIJLPARK – From the streets of Vanderbijlpark emerges a remarkable young talent in the South African art scene namely, Try Phoku. His art cognoscente can be seen in his tremendous portraits and inspiring journey. Despite being a phenomenal visual artist, Phoku is a third-year student at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) studying Performing Arts.
Phoku’s passion for artistry ignited at the age of 12. This passion, through self-directed dedication, has sharpened a distinctive style that has set him apart. Phoku’s portraits are not merely representations, but rather delicate explorations of the human experience, capturing the complication of emotion and inner light with remarkable depth.
Phoku explained that when he is drawing, he feels like he’s escaping his problems, stating: “Drawing is my passion and when I draw I am escaping from all my problems without moving. I feel complete and like I have found myself. I live by the philosophy that emphasises inspiration, connection, and community, encouraging emerging artists to experiment, take risks and cultivate supportive networks.”
His art embodies his belief in the transformative power of art as a universal language that can heal and unite. Phoku has notable features on national television, including the SABC and exhibitions at esteemed venues like the Tshwane University of Technology.
As his career continues to expand, he aspires to share his passion with future generations as an art teacher, nurturing young talent and perpetuating the power of art. With his strong online presence, Phoku engages with fans and fellow artists, cementing his position as a shining example of perseverance and dedication.
