LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – Each year, a nationwide high school visual art competition is held to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district.
Saturday morning, artists and their families gathered at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse with Representative Derrick Van Orden.

35 pieces of art were on display with nine of those artists in attendance. Artwork was judged by a board of professionals selecting first through fourth place winners.
First place gets their art piece displayed in the United States Capital for a full year while second place gets their art displayed in Congressman Van Orden’s office in Washington D.C. for a year.
“I hope they take away the fact when you work hard you will be rewarded. These young people worked incredibly hard. Their parents have supported them through these projects,” Congressman Van Orden said. “Many of the high school art classes within the district also supported their kids to get them out here. It’s fantastic. Work hard you will be rewarded.”
This year’s first place winner was Katelyn Klemm. Her piece was titled “With Liberty and Justice.”
Second place went to Lily Vue. She called her piece “Two Sides of the Same Coin.”
