TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Young Topeka artists were recognized for their work and contributions to their community.
The 2024 Young Artist Awards were held Wednesday night at the Topeka Performing Arts Center. 10 young artists were selected from categories covering music, theater, visual arts, and community service in the arts. The artists say they do mostly create for their own passion.
“It’s so much fun getting to perform on stage, and the work ethic that goes into it and just all the joy it brings,” Emily Patton said.
“Everybody looks at arts as a fad, it’s just something to do to pass the time,” TPAC Director Rory Kent, Jr. said. “But no, the arts are huge. That’s where you get your singers from, your dancers. It starts now.”
Panels comprised of experienced artists in each category selected the winners, who will receive scholarships afforded by Security Benefit. The winners were as follows:
- Carter Tappan – Community Service in the Arts
- Alaina Barry – Dance
- Emily Patton – Dance
- Brady Clark – Dramatic Theater
- Miriam Smith – Dramatic Theater
- Lillian Krohe – Musical Theater
- Victoria “Happi” Rodriguez – Visual Arts
- Elaina Sinclair – Visual Arts
- Jonas Buford – Vocal Music
- Addison Resch – Vocal Music
Mayor Mike Padilla once again served as guest speaker for the ceremony.
