Visual artist finds employment in art

VISUAL artist and craftsman Joseph Svisva has urged Zimbabweans to master art, as it has the potential to reduce the nation’s unemployment rate, adding that art and crafts have helped him lead a fulfilling life.

In an interview with NewsDay Life & Style, Svisva said his passion for art was nurtured at a tender age at Umgusa Primary School in Bulawayo, where he grew up.

“The business is growing and I believe if people learn art, we can help to reduce unemployment in the country. I have had the privilege of selling art to clients from all walks of life, including celebrities and government officials,” he said.

The artist recalled: “My artistic journey began when I discovered my passion for crafting, painting and designing in primary school. I vividly remember when the teacher back then, assigned us to illustrate the national coat of arms.

“To my surprise, my rendition stood out and that was the moment I realised my talent for art.”

As an experienced artist, Svisva now draws inspiration from the richness and diversity of life experiences, as well as the beauty of nature.

He further pointed out that these elements had been the driving force behind his creative process, shaping his artistic vision and honing his skills over the years.

“My journey as an artist has been a continuous evolution, fuelled by a deep-rooted passion for self-expression and a relentless pursuit of capturing the essence of the world around me through art,” he noted.

Svisva urged aspiring artists to pursue their dream no matter how small and challenging it may seem, adding that moments of self doubt are integral to growth as an artist.

He elaborated that artists should open their minds and hearts to the world around them, saying that inspiration can be found in the smallest details of everyday life, nature and stories or emotions of people they encounter.

He also highlighted that the journey of an artist requires perseverance and persistence, adding that dedication leads to breakthroughs and new heights.
