BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): A decorative fish breeding company from Japan showed interest in setting up operations in the country.
Director and Chairman Yoshida Shinichi from CYCLO Inc, known for producing nishikigoi (ornamental fish) as well as fish feed, paid a courtesy call to Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Abdul Manaf Metussin recently and discussed establishment of nishikigoi breeding and fish feed production facilities.
The products would target markets on Borneo and the Middle East.
Accompanying Yoshida were Director of Atami Brunei Nishikigoi Promotion Association Ikeda Shuichi, Tama Art University Professor Maruhashi Hirofumi, an investor Ohkawa Masaru and a representative from Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) Okouchi Hiroshi.
For the record, Koi or more specifically nishikigoi are coloured varieties of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio) that are kept for decorative purposes in outdoor koi ponds or water gardens.
The koi are a group of breeds produced by artificial selection primarily from black carp called nogoi which inhabit lakes, ponds, and rivers in Japan.
The black carp refers to the Eurasian carp (Cyprinus carpio), which was previously thought to have been introduced to Japan from Eurasia in prehistoric times.
Koi-keeping or breeding can be a profitable and rewarding business venture for those with a passion for aquatic life. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
