A weekly showcase featuring local artists

Name: Kimmie Horne

Sound: Jazz

History: You can’t talk about jazz in Detroit without mentioning Kimmie Horne. A dynamic performer from a musical family, Horne is a pillar in the jazz community for talents and her work supporting others. Her great aunt was legendary movie star Lena Horne and her uncle was Cleveland Horne of the Motown group Fantastic Four. She can be seen regularly around Metro Detroit at jazz festivals and at clubs like the Blue Llama and Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe.

The latest: The annual Kimmie Horne Jazz Festival returns to Southfield this weekend for two days of live music at the city’s municipal campus. Each year Horne chooses a music icon to honor during the free, outdoor festival and this year it’s Motown legend and Detroit native Freda Payne. Suitable for all ages, the jazz festival also has artists, food trucks and interactive activities.

“This festival has become a treasured tradition in our community,” said Horne in a press release announcing the 8th annual event. “It allows us to showcase the beauty of jazz and the immense talent that Detroit is known for worldwide. We invite everyone to join us for a weekend of exceptional music, cultural enrichment, and heartfelt connections.”

The Kimmie Horne Jazz Festival runs 6-10:30 p.m. Fri. and 3-10:30 p.m. Sat. at 26000 Evergreen in Southfield. Visit cityofsouthfield.com/visitors/attractions/kimmie-horne-jazz-festival for the full line up and other details.
