LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Another annual Art in the Park brings together a community of people, both who enjoy art and those who create it. That’s been apparent in the many residents that were present at Columbian Park.
Tuesday evening’s Art in the Park theme was titled “Decades.” It featured a variety of local artists, vendors and live music from The Groove. First launching in 2014 by Lafayette Parks and Recreation, the event helps people dive into the atmosphere of art.
Lucas Russo is an artist who started showcasing his work over the last few years. His artwork is called All Aquarian Art. It consists of both photography and paintings. For him and other artists alike, events such as Art in the Park, is an opportunity to express their abilities.
“Every single time I do a show like this or an event like this, or it’s seen, or even one follower on Instagram,” Russo said. “I’m a firm believer that when you create something, especially like art, but really when you create anything, it takes on kind of a life of it’s own.”
Kathleen Lee uses watercolor in her artwork. Her work was first inspired through a dying flower in her garden, which she was prompted to draw. Originally from Illinois, Lee moved to Lafayette due to the lively art scene.
“I had a sunflower that was weeping and dying in the garden and she just looked so sad. I was staring at her and people asked what I was staring at and I said, her. Don’t you see her?” Lee said. “I just love this whole thing. Art in the Park is amazing. The parks here in Lafayette are amazing. And the changes I’ve seen her in just a short period of time, the stuff that is going up in the parks. It’s a good place. It’s a growing place and I’m happy here.”
The next Art in the Park series will be titled “Dog Days of Summer.” It’s scheduled for Tuesday, July 9th at McCaw Park, in celebration of the new dog park which opened earlier this year.
